I stood outside yesterday evening with Tidbit. As he explored the yard I just stood and listened to the sound of the neighborhood. We are in a rural area so I heard a dog bark, several cows, birds, an occasional car or truck up on the road. I heard the rustle of small animals and birds in the carpet of dead leaves.
Then I heard several dogs barking and yipping. The barks slid quickly into howls and more dogs joined in. As I stood there listening they all coalesced into an eerie harmony. It was a beautiful, wild canine song and other dogs joined in. I could hear them coming in from different directions. For several minutes I listened to this perfect joining, wishing I had some good recording equipment. Then the song slowly broke apart and became several dogs barking once more. But for a few moments, I literally heard the call of the wild.
